      About

Just a stone’s throw from restful Lumpini Park is equally refined Cantonese cuisine at Xin Tian Di at the Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park. In its sprawling, smartly-decorated dining room, sophisticated Cantonese plates with modern European touches arrive at the table, courtesy of a kitchen led by Master Chinese Chef and Iron Chef Thai winner Lam Kok Weng, living up to the cuisine’s reputation for combining elegance and showy panache.

In the daytime, there’s a bustling ‘yum-cha’ crowd tucking into the restaurant’s signature dim sum; all the classics from flaky baked char siu pastry to crystal-skinned shrimp dumplings, washed down with hot Chinese tea. At lunch and dinner, more substantial dishes take centre stage, showing off the Cantonese predilection for rich sauces, slow-cooked soups, and beautifully-cooked seafood and vegetables. Start the meal off with a classic Cantonese soup like a double-boiled Buddha Jumps Over the Wall kissed with black truffle in a superior stock.

Vegetables follow, with hearty numbers like broccoli topped with shredded scallops and crabmeat, and a classic Thai vegetable, morning glory shoots, sauteed with pungent Cantonese shrimp paste. Cantonese-style braising turns the toughest of cuts into heavenly, melt-in-your-mouth morsels, like fatty Kurobuta pork braised to fork-tender perfection and served with punchy salted fish. You’d be remiss to skip out on the seafood here, everything from tender braised abalone to live fish gently steamed and served with seasonal vegetables. There’s a reason Cantonese cuisine is regarded as one of the finest of Chinese culinary traditions. Take a break from bustling downtown Bangkok and find out why. (October 2016)
