    Everyone at this restaurant in Karon, Phuket, seems to be tucking into crimson-red lobsters smothered in buttery sauce and topped either with tangles of spaghetti or a bed of fries, and with good cause: these are Phuket lobsters, sweet, fleshy, responsibly sourced and delicious, served plainly grilled or thermidor-style with an oozing blanket of cheese.

    Lobsters may be a signature of this Italian-owned casual eatery, but the kitchen extends its skills to other local seafood and Western fare. Snapper is baked in a crust of bread crumbs and herbs, a salmon steak is grilled till fragrant and tender, and local crabs are turned into rich Thai-style curries, or lightly fried in garlic and black pepper. It’s a varied menu that seems to offer virtually everything under the Phuket sun including pastas, steaks, burgers, and a selection of Thai favourites like fluffy pineapple rice, pork stir fried with basil leaves, and the ubiquitous tom yum goong. Still, this close to the sea, and with lobsters flying out of the kitchen, it’s seafood that has pride of place here. So give yourself permission to overload just a bit on the cholesterol and place an order for that live lobster in the tank: it’s worth it. (Dec 2016)
