      This small 24-seat restaurant is easy to miss but walk in and you will a restaurant packed to its brim with the after-work crowd as well as dishes with tons of personality. A list of traditional and fusion sushi alongside some seasonal offerings is the mainstay here. Dishes are stripped down so fresh ingredients are key, and Fatboy follows through by importing from Japanese thrice weekly. But it’s not ostentatious dishes and astronomical prices here - Fatboy’s owner stays true to his mission to create an unpretentious spot where customers may enjoy high quality cuisine at fair prices.

      Whet your appetite with the Hamachi Chilli Ponzu, where thin slices of yellowtail is topped with garlic and a sliver of bird’s eye chilli. The heat from the chilli is tempered by the hint of acidity and sweetness from the ponzu sauce. Move on to the luxurious Godfather, where a large prawn is accompanied by foie gras, truffle pasta, caviar and edible gold flake. Pink Himalayan salt dusts are sprinkled across the serving board for that little salt kick with each bite. On another indulgent note, The Fatboy Roll, filled with foie gras, wagyu beef strips, fried Japanese onions, avocado and a dollop of Bega cream cheese, is as decadent as it is delicious. It might sound like too much to handle, but the flavours are nuanced and layered so you savour the beef (dressed in unagi sauce and truffle oil, no doubt) and fried onions before the taste of foie gras hits. The final act - the avocado and cream cheese - act as a fitting denouement by balancing the richness of the foie gras. Add the finishing touches to a stellar meal by taking it down one notch with some yakitori sides such as the classic chicken skin, shitake mushrooms, and pork belly. It’s a celebration of sushi and Japanese cuisine like never before. (September 2018)
