Nestled in a cosy shophouse along the buzzing Sukhumvit Soi 16, Makan Makan (which translates to ‘eat’ in Malay) dishes out homely East-meets-West recipes reminiscent of grandma’s cooking. Carbs are a staple in the Southeast-Asian diet, and Makan Makan stays true to this with a variety of rice and noodle dishes. Crowd favourites include Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee, where vermicelli and yellow egg noodles are tossed over high heat and served in a rich, spicy prawn broth — the result of mashing and simmering prawn heads and shells to make a tasty stock. Try also the Makan Makan Signature Fried Rice, a comforting plate of rice stir-fried with vegetables, sambal paste, and chopped Chinese sausage (lap cheong). The dish is topped with juicy chicken satay and a fried egg that begs to be broken and mixed in with the fluffy rice.

Mains lean more towards Western flavours, with recognisable favourites such as fish and chips and Guiness lamb shank. Think you can handle the heat? Give the Oriental Chicken Chop a shot. The boneless chicken leg is seasoned with Chinese spices, served with a simple gravy and a side of stir-fried vegetables.

Save some room for dessert. The Cendol Ice Cream, laced with pandan jellies and gula melaka (brown palm sugar) is a sweet treat indeed. (March 2019)
