      About

Located in Sala Daeng, this cosy establishment nestled in a shophouse has garnered a solid reputation and a large fan following for itself through its fine, exquisite tapas. Taburete is headed by its chef-owner Kannika Kongkaew, who spent a decade in Spain learning from the best in Spanish cuisine. The menu is small and steers clear of worn-out favourites such as paella, which can only be pre-ordered, though Patatas Bravas, the quintessential Spanish classic takes a well-deserved spot on the menu.

More unconventional contenders also deserve praise. Take the Empanadilla de Cordero, a lamb confit wrapped in filo pastry and served with a red-wine sauce, for instance: Chef Kannika’s decision to substitute the traditional empanada dough with filo pastry is stroke of brilliance. The dish instantly takes on a lighter bite, allowing the rich red-wine sauce to complement the tender lamb seamlessly. Can’t find these dishes on the menu? That’s because the menu changes thrice a year, reflecting the seasonal nature of the produce hailing from Spain, France, and Thailand. In any case, anything on the menu is a definite must-try.

The stellar plates are complemented by the tasteful decor, though the space sits just under 10 tables. It would probably be wise to make a reservation and you’re at just the right place to do so! (July 2018)

      The buzz

“On our most recent visit, all the recommendations were spot on, namely the empanadilla de cordero, a succulent lamb confit in red wine sauce whose filo pastry basically disintegrates in your mouth, and the heavily-charred grilled octopus, served diced in a smoky cauliflower cream. Dishes are said to change every few months, with the menu punctuated by specials like a chicken and rice casserole that’s somewhere between a paella and risotto. The broth bursts with hearty chicken goodness that’s cut by the slight sourness of artichoke.” -BK Magazine
