    Pop art and graffiti line the walls of this intimate and funky Modern-European restaurant in the swish dining enclave of Telok Ayer. Occasional Asian elements punch up the flavours here, a selection of small plates and smoky grilled mains all blessed with the smoky perfume of an imported Josper charcoal grill. The mains are super meaty-heavy so lighten up with some green small plates to share. A refreshing and crunchy Endive & Shallot Créme-Blue Cheese Salad is a good way to start, filled with bittersweet endive, walnuts, and creamy studs of fruity blue cheese livened by an orange-balsamic vinaigrette. Or start the meat-fest early with creamy Bone Marrow, paired with refreshing white wine jelly, a piquant tomato salsa, and chips of deep fried garlic.

    Once the mains come along, it’s a parade of beautiful grilled meats and seafood. Think chewy and sweet baby octopus given a rapid sear under the grill before being tossed with squid ink rice, a paprika-spiced rouille and sweet sun-dried tomato. Savour the rare treat of a Free-Range Yellow Chicken, roasted and deboned then served with olives, tahini, lentils, and a curry brown sauce for some exotic Middle-Eastern flair. Bone-In Beef Short Ribs accompanied by zingy beetroot and pickled potato will satisfy the meatiest cravings, but go slightly overboard with a Tomahawk, not of beef, but pork, a giant chop served with roasted pineapple that’s been infused with rum. A good, practically festive meal served in hip, Instagrammable surroundings, fȳr is one of the great gems of downtown dining. (Nov 2017)
