    To see coffee loving hipsters in their natural environment, look no further than Habitat Coffee. Situated off Upper Thomson Road, the stylish digs look as if a trendy Instagram feed has sprung off your phone and into real life. Plenty of clean black lines, white washed facades and raw concrete compose the space, accented with epic latte art and the chrome plated aesthetic of the espresso machine. This is, without a doubt, an artisanal coffee experience with carefully selected coffee beans blended together locally to create an addictively potent yet smooth house blend. Offering a tight selection of espresso drinks with some teas and flavoured options, this is not the place to get your venti half-caf dessert-like drink.

    It is, however, and to the surprise of those who judge the hipster look too quickly, the place to go for very good homestyle cooking. From salads, sandwiches, pastas to most vitally, brunch, Habitat Coffee does it all. Indeed, a communal table can be seen shared by a skinny-jeaned techy on one side and a bustling family on the other, thanks to the satisfying and widely appealing menu.

    The Shrooms is an umami-filled play on the traditional benedict, with wild mushrooms, poached eggs and hollandaise topping buttered brioche toast. The Eggs Tomato Relish is another house favourite, presenting as a cast-iron pan of secret recipe sauce with eggs, bacon and spinach and served with country sourdough to mop it all up. For something sweet, the Apple Cinnamon Pancakes are a great bet, with spiced apples stewed with raisins and walnuts atop fluffy flapjacks. Good for simply tasty food and great coffee any time of day, Habitat Coffee is worth exploring! (Feb 2015)
