    About

A heavyweight in the sushi counter-culture, Kinki Restaurant has been wowing the hip and tasteful crowds along Marina Bay for years, and the throngs of merrymakers show no signs of slowing down. Situated atop the Customs House building with knockout views of MBS, it's no surprise to learn that Kinki has some celebrity backing. However, given the edgy, underground vibe of the place, it makes sense that the celebrity in question is a fictional sumo wrestler, who defies all odds to allow his culinary alter ego to shine. His story is etched all over the restaurant and bar, from the wild floor mural by an artist of "Miami Ink" TV fame, to the graffiti clad walls and comic book styled menu. Despite the laidback persona of the place - with sneaker-wearing waitstaff and up-to-the-moment beats always pumping - the cuisine at Kinki Restaurant is nonetheless inventive, high-end and would make the restaurant's namesake proud. A palatable selection of mains includes the High Roller Wagyu Don - features ohmi A4 wagyu, Hokkaido uni, ikura, summer black truffle, onsen egg, Premium Unagi Claypot with homemade umami sauce and more. There's also traditional sushi and sashimi handled by masterful chefs behind the ice bar. "Rock & Roll" offers an interesting mix of creative maki rolls that lesser sushi restaurants are too risk-averse to try. If there ever were a sushi bar bold enough to go for it, while still paying respects to the artistry of the cuisine, Kinki would be it. The Foie Gras and Scallop Nigiri features delicate, pan seared foie with a plump, juicy Hokkaido-bred scallop, while the Golden Age offers an expert balance of meaty fish and bright fruit. There are more filling mains and cleverly crafted cold dishes as well, a selection that is well suited for any range of hunger.

On the alfresco front, level three rooftop bar is a frequent hangout for the after-work crowd, with a plentiful selection of sake as well as the envelope-pushing cocktails you would expect from such a thrilling spot as Kinki. Long-standing favourites are the Kinki Mango Mint and Gin Berry. Their food menu also features an array of small bites such as Karaage Chicken Bao and Squid and chips.

Now a well-established mainstay along the Marina Bay waterfront, rest assured there are no kinks to be worked out in Kinki Restaurant's daring and delicious concept. (Aug 2020)
