    Sum Yi Tai has already made a name for itself with its sensuous name and unique ambience the straitlaced would cover from. Now, they’ve upped the ante with a bar in the back room of the second floor of the restaurant which is accessible only with a password that can be obtained on the website or from the servers on the first floor. From the gilded mahjong gold tiles on the tables to the cushy upholstery arranged with purposeful carelessness, everything about this bar screams ostentatious excess.

    The draw here are the cocktails, each with their unique link to Mona, the elusive third wife the restaurant draws its name from. Ask, and the bartenders are sure to regale you with tales of Mona’s exploits, and how each concoction got its name. Sip on the light Lady’s Elixir, a mix of Remy Martin and VSOP mixed with monk fruit soda and sea salt drops for a lightly sweet flavour. Purported to have “close to zero” calories, this is the perfect drink for diners watching their waistlines.

    For something closer to home, try the Songstress. Served in a bottle of Pei Pa Koa, this drink is made with Bulleit Rye whiskey, angostura bitters, and a hearty dose of the sickly sweet traditional herbal medicine most Singaporeans have grown to love. (Feb 2019)
